Forma parte de la Corporación de Medios de Andalucía, que a su vez pertenece al grupo Vocento.[2] Fundada en 1932 por la Editorial Católica, desde entonces ha tenido una larga trayectoria. Aunque su publicación se circunscribe en gran medida a Andalucía Oriental, Ideal se distribuye en las provincias de Granada, Almería y Jaén, donde cuenta con ediciones locales[3] En la actualidad es el periódico de mayor difusión por suscripción en estas provincias y uno de los principales de Andalucía, alcanzando en 2010 unos 164.000 lectores diarios según el Estudio general de medios (EGM)[4].

Ideal tuvo en sus orígenes al diario católico y conservador La Gaceta del Sur, que había desaparecido en 1931. La jerarquía católica de Granada decidió lanzar un nuevo periódico, contando con la colaboración de periodistas como Ángel Herrera Oria y de Pedro Gómez Aparicio[5] El periódico salió a la calle por primera vez el 8 de mayo de 1932[6] y fue editado por la Editorial Católica[7] En estos primeros años de existencia fue un periódico claramente confesional y conservador[8] y su principal rival periodístico fue el liberal El Defensor de Granada. [9] En el contexto de los años 30, Ideal era el periódico mejor fabricado de la provincia,[10] superando a otros editados en esta época,[b] destacando en esta época el trabajo de Ramón Ruiz Alonso,[10] tipógrafo del periódico.[12] Durante los años de la Segunda República la publicación, que alcanzó una tirada de 9000 ejemplares,[13] según la CEDA.[14]
