All actors who have a media presence, either because of their professional facet or because of their ease of appearing in the press for other reasons, are capable of attracting a considerable mass of audience to their series or movies. If these performers are very good, the expectation is more than justified. Although that does not exempt that the final product turns out to be a disappointment.

Since 2012, Jon Hamm and Daniel Radcliffe, two actors typecast for their roles in Mad Men and Harry Potter respectively, embarked on a series called A Young Doctor’s Notebook. The series, which premiered in 2012 and has two seasons of four episodes each so far, is based on quasi-biographical stories by writer Mikhail Bulgakov that recount the life of a newly licensed doctor stationed in a village in deep Russia during the country’s civil war.

In its favor: two short seasons with episodes of a manageable length. The problem is that even these, with less than 25 minutes of footage, are a bit long. Nor does it make much sense to show the future of the doctor without putting him in a more appropriate context, since in the first season he is in one place without explaining why, and in the second he is stumbling around without sense.

It’s what he does. And he’s great at doing it. Now, the masturbation sketch is no longer viewed in the same light knowing the reality behind those jokes. Anyway, a couple of thoughts on the fly: if it’s wrong to masturbate thinking about someone who hasn’t given you consent, I think much of humanity is doomed. And then, it’s fiction. It’s a joke. It’s actors reenacting a scene imagined by Louis C.K. Again, the fun of the scene may have faded but there’s something worse and more serious going on in this series.

‘Louie’ is written, directed and stars Louis C.K. The main character is named Louie CK, he’s a comedian, he has two daughters and he’s divorced. No further clues can be given, it is an auteur work. It’s still fiction but the creator can’t help but talk about himself, his concerns, obsessions and favorite subjects and use the series as a form of therapy where he releases everything he carries inside. Including, of course, his relationship with the female sex.

The most representative episode of Louis CK’s problem is in 4×10, ‘Pamela: Part I’. It is interesting because it starts with a romantic tone, with a wonderful scene about love, and there is a monologue with feminist content that leaves no one with a head. She laughs at American democracy because women couldn’t vote until 1920, freaks out that there’s still a T-shirt called “wife-beater” and wonders why God is a man: “If he’s our father, where is our mother?”.
