“If only you knew how little I know about the things that matter,” Elio tells Oliver. The phrase serves to initiate an essentially elliptical conversation, about one of those things that the young man still doesn’t know, and about which Oliver refuses to talk: love.

The conversation takes place in what could be the central scene of Call Me by Your Name: the director, Luca Guadagnino, follows his two protagonists in the distance, as they each walk around a square on their own, until they meet again halfway. At heart, Call Me by Your Name is a film about that distance, the distance that separates, brings closer and separates again Elio, an enormously cultured teenager who knows all sorts of details about World War I but is unaware of the importance of love, and Oliver, an American writer visiting Elio’s family’s vacation home.

Call me by your name is a love story as forceful as it is beautiful with a tremendous ending that obviously I can’t comment on but it’s a perfect mirror to an American classic from the 80s, whether plagiarism or homage, the final shot is pure art.

Personally, I choose Guadagnino’s new Suspiria over this film. It’s well acted, with excellent camerawork and photography, but the story goes way too far off the rails and the 132 minutes become interminable. I don’t agree that this is a love story, and it didn’t touch my soul at all.

It was directed by Luca Guadagnino and written by James Ivory, based on the novel of the same name by André Aciman (2007). The film is an international production and belongs to Guadagnino’s “Desire” trilogy along with Io sono l’amore (2009) and Blinded by the Sun (2015).

The film had been in development since 2007, when producers Peter Spears and Howard Rosenman acquired the rights to the novel. Ivory was tapped to direct it but ultimately served as screenwriter. Guadagnino, who was to serve as location consultant, was chosen as director in 2016. Filming took place in Crema between May and June 2016. The film was shot on 35mm reels under the command of cinematographer Sayombhu Mukdeeprom.

Elio and Oliver start spending time together. Elio begins a sexual relationship with Marzia and brags about it in front of Oliver to gauge his reaction. During a trip to the post office, Elio subtly confesses his feelings for Oliver, who gently tells him that he should not act on them. They go to a place exclusive to Elio, and he kisses Oliver on the lips. Oliver returns the gesture, but hesitates to go further. The couple becomes distant over the next few days.
